5 Race Day Fashion Essentials

Heading out for the Derby or a day at the Races requires a little planning, because it's not all about picking the perfect trifecta! You need a winning outfit too.

For Derby, there are two ways to build an outfit. One, you can start with the hat or fascinator and build your look around that. Or two, you can start with the outfit and pair it with an incredibly fashionable and complimentary hat. Either way, you want the the accent colors to match between your hat and outfit. Once you have those two pieces, the rest is down hill but you still need to coordinate your outfit.

So to get you started, we've put together the 5 Essentials you need to be few tips to get you started!

1. Pick a sunny or floral dress. Lace and flowery prints are big this spring, and you also want to be comfortable. Sun dresses with an A-line skirt are perfect for trips to the Paddock, and flattering on almost every body style. Look for off-the-shoulder or cold-shoulder styles and keyhole accents in dresses this season.

2. Choose comfortable, stylish shoes. As beautiful as 5" heels may be, you're going to be doing a lot of walking and you don't want to be doing the donkey walk of pain back to the car! Stay under 3" on the heels, and keep a pair of flats or cute sandals in your purse. There are adorable flats available in several colors to match your outfit at Aldo.

3. Pick a versatile bag or clutch. Find a purse that can be transformed from a clutch into a cross body for the hands free option, and don't forget to pack a small umbrella if rain is in the forecast. You won't want to miss any of those perfect Instagram-worthy photo opportunities, so pick up a clutch at Francesca's that includes a charger inside... so you won't find yourself with a drained phone before the end of the day!

4. Polish your look with the perfect jewelry. If you're wearing a hat, you will want to be minimal with the jewelry. Don't detract from the main attraction! Strive to find minimalist gold chains and a pair of classy stud earrings. Check out Bevello for a wide selection of options, including designs by Kate Spade and Kendra Scott. You can be more creative with your choice of bracelets, and look to include a pop of color that compliments the rest of the outfit.

5. Don't forget a scarf or cardigan! Whether you're at Keeneland or Churchill Downs, there are plenty of shadowy areas that can be breezy. While bourbon may be your favorite antifreeze, you'll still want to pack a light scarf or cardigan to stay warm. Look for a scarf that has fringe or tassles on the end at H&M, to be right on point with spring styles.

That's it... but don't forget the most beautiful and timeless style is a big smile. Make the day yours and enjoy the races!
